Keep readers on your page longer

Your author site is the home for your books, blog, events, and contact information. Its design can draw people in or push them away.

And you want to yank them in and never let them go, right?

These seventeen tips can help you create a site future readers will enjoy:

Make It Easy To Find Everything

Rather than jam-packing your site with every clever image and word you can think of, try the following:

  • Leave a lot of whitespace
  • Make your navigation menu clear (i.e., home, blog, books)
  • Add a sticky navigation menu (usually, these are stuck to the top of the page when users scroll, but I’ve seen menus in many places)
  • Put your contact information in easy-to-find places
  • Give readers many ways to contact you (i.e., email, social media, etc.)
  • Ensure your book’s information is above the fold. Don’t make users scroll as soon as they get on your page
  • Don’t forget about accessibility

Make It Easy for Your Readers To Know What To Do

Don’t confuse your readers. Keep your calls to action clear and simple. You want them to follow your instructions, not wonder what they are.

  • “Read the first chapter”
  • “Subscribe to my newsletter”
  • “Purchase merch”
  • Make it clear what happens when readers push a button (i.e., “read more,” “subscribe now”)

Make It Easy for Readers To Buy More

  • Separate series of books into their own sections so they’re easy to order together
  • Add a carousel if you’ve written tons of books
  • Create a page dedicated to translations of your work
  • Provide a reading order if you have a series (help people know which book to read first, second, etc.)

Make It Easy for Readers To Come Back

  • Keep your tone casual and intimate, especially in your blog (though you can have a more professional tone too)
  • Add more than just links to your books. Engage readers with YouTube clips, audio files, and more
  • Optimize your site’s speed
  • Post your site on your social media accounts
